Barb Lucas – Sculpture & Sacred Objects

Artist Statement

My art is my spiritual practice.  The time I spend creating feels like deep prayer.  My mind quiets and becomes receptive.  Time recedes and a door to the imaginal realm opens, if I persist.

I am an expressive arts therapist by trade and because of this I have dabbled in many mediums.  The expressive arts emphasize process over product.  It is the mystical conversation that most interests me and many art processes facilitate that dialogue.

I love to play with paint and paper, shape and texture.  I prefer mixed media and assemblage and find these forms provide me the most freedom to mess around, explore, get it wrong, and start again.

After decades of experimentation across mediums, forever lamenting that I didn't know what "my art" was, I followed my inspiration to Art & Soul Portland in October 2022 for a class in soldered Santos dolls. It was the moment I discovered my true art.

I soldered computer mother boards in the early days, when I was still a teenager, and returning to this medium to create sacred objects was like arriving at an Inner Cathedral after a very, very long pilgrimage.  I am eternally grateful to my mentor, Rochelle Gaukel, who continues to inspire and educate me in the application of stamped soldering techniques for the making of sacred objects.
