Leisa Lewis - Hot Wax & Watercolor

Artist Statement

I make art because it's deeply a part of who I am. I work with my hands, my head, and my heart creating pieces that fill me with hope and anticipation. Before I begin a painting I connect words and colors to an idea that comes to me just by living my daily life, sometimes naming it before I've sketched it.

Vibrant and slightly abstract art comes through with my use of hot beeswax and watercolor on rice paper. My technique is a combination of the age-old practice of Fabric Batik and Encaustic medium. I layer the wax and watercolor washes to build value. In the end, I iron the wax off and the art is revealed. I preserve it under a beautifully rich mixture of beeswax and damar resin.

For the past few years, I've been fascinated by the uncomplicated thinking of my grandchildren. When they're creating art, nothing is wrong and everything is a masterpiece. I'm inspired to capture that enthusiasm into my art today by expressing my ideas with more simplicity. With a gesture I want the painting to intuitively tell its story.
