Artist Statement
I began creating as soon as I could hold a crayon. The pleasure of seeing, expressing, discovery and interacting with my observations has been life long.
I grew up in Montana, where the harsh and the beautiful elements intertwine and helped to shape my artistic expression.
I earned a BFA in Art and Art Education from the U of M, (MT) and went on to teach art in several Montana schools. My first teaching job was at an Indian alternative school on the Flathead Reservation, where we often joined the Indian Elders who taught us native crafts. The curriculum there was based upon individualized instruction and greatly influenced my teaching approach from then on. In all my teaching positions I encouraged each of my students to discover their own individual path of creative expression.
My own "path of discovery" led me to work for many years as a Custom Portrait Artist, preceded by many years of commercial design work. My designs graced diverse products, including limited edition prints and notecards, that were published and distributed throughout the Northwest. My artwork was on a "path of production". Creative discovery and self expression had to take a backseat, while creating on demand honed my technical skills.
I've traveled this road of discovery for over 45 years now. There are many pathways yet undiscovered. Perhaps this road will come full circle---where I grab a crayon in my little fist and joyfully express how much I love being an Artist!
